Kümbet: Medieval Anatolian Tombs

Decoration

The seven visible sides of the octagonal tomb are accentuated with engaged colonnettes on the corners. Each colonnette has a different decoration. There are projecting mouldings on the upper and lower edges. The upper moulding is located beneath the pyramidal dome. Below this moulding is a muqarnas frieze, which envelops the building. Under this muqarnas cornice, an inscriptional band composed of the basmala, the Throne Verse (Ayat al-Kursi) and the 18th and 19th verses of the surah Al-i ‘Imran encloses the tomb.  Between the upper and the lower mouldings, each side of the tomb is articulated with a pointed blind arch which has repeating geometric patterns. The spandrels of the arches are also accentuated with continuous geometric motifs. The design on every side is different. The surface enclosed by the pointed blind arches is plain except for a small window with a miniature marble pillar placed as a mullion. The pointed arches of the small windows and the triangular capitals of the pillars are the only places that have vegetal scroll motifs.

The decoration of the square base consists of five rows of muqarnas cells that have large bold forms carved in white marble. The rows widen towards the top, ending with a moulding edge. Since the northern side of the base is flush with the wall of the madrasa, the muqarnas decoration is applied only to three sides.

In the octagonal interior of the tomb, the only decorated area is the mihrab. The mihrab niche has two rectangular and two arched frames. Each is ornamented with a different geometric pattern. There are two hemispherical roundels between the arched and rectangular frames. The hood of the niche is composed of five rows of muqarnas, and its interior lower part is filled with geometric motifs.
